What is placement learning?

1.3   Placement learning is defined as learning that is an integrated part of a taught programme of study and which takes place outside Cardiff University. This can take many forms but will commonly fall into one of three categories:

• Work placements for learning in workplace settings. These may include periods of industrial experience, language assistantships and teaching practice and may be paid or unpaid;
• Study placements involving periods of study away at other universities or comparable institutions. These include Erasmus study programmes and other study placements abroad;
• Clinical placements involving periods of learning in a clinical setting.

The diversity requires that this Code of Practice is generic in nature as it is intended to cover all types of placement learning. Often, there will be additional disciplinary or professional guidelines that provide further information on the operation of specific placement types, for example, the Agreement for the Provision of Medical Undergraduate Clinical Teaching for clinical placements. These supplement this overarching Code of Practice for Placement Learning in those settings.
