PCUTL Projects:
Enhancing formative feedback in large cohort modules: a case study from CARBS
The objective of this pilot study was to improve NSS-type feedback scores in large cohort modules where providing individualized feedback is a challenge. In the study 25% of students (“treatment group”) had an opportunity to submit their own solutions for tutorial questions to their TA, who voluntarily agreed to provide individualized feedback. The remaining 75% students (“control group”) received only generic feedback (past exam solutions etc.). End of semester survey results showed that the treatment group had significantly higher post-Module feedback evaluation scores than their peers in the control group. Most noticeable was the absence of ‘angry customer’ low outlier scores. The project suggests that offering individualised feedback engaged previously ‘angry’ learners and increased their overall satisfaction with the module. The initiative will be continued.
