Students undertake a wide range of summative assessments whilst at University, depending on their programme of study and the different learning outcomes they need to demonstrate. Forms of summative assessment fall into one of three groups; Written examinations (both those organised by the University and by Schools), Coursework (including essays, reports, portfolios, and project work) and Practical Assessments (including lab work and presentations). The resources below link to information useful to staff managing assessments.
- Assessment tasks need to be aligned with intended learning outcomes, and with learning and teaching activities;
- Assessment tasks need to allow learners equal opportunities to demonstrate achievement of the learning outcomes;
- The volume and range of assessment tasks needs to be appropriate to the learning outcomes of the unit of study and/or programme.
