The National Teaching Fellowship Scheme (NTFS) aims to recognise and celebrate individuals who make an outstanding impact on the student learning experience. The awards of £10000 carry considerable prestige and offer unique developmental opportunities and a national profile. In Spring 2011, two Cardiff staff were successful in gaining awards. Cardiff colleagues who can demonstrate an exceptional contribution to learning and teaching are strongly encouraged to consider submitting a nomination for the 2012 round of awards. Further information and submission details are available on the National Teaching Fellowship Scheme page.

Call for Contributions, Cardiff Technology-Enhanced Education Conference 2011

March 2nd, 2011 | View Comments

QR Code for the Conference WebsiteAt last year’s event Technology-Enhanced Education Conference for Cardiff over 100 attendees heard from over 20 presenters giving details of pedagogical practice from a range of contexts. We received a lot of feedback indicating a strong desire to see the conference run again, and this year the conference is to be held on Friday 6th May in the School of Optometry, the same venue as in 2010. This year the conference will include online presentations and discussion and a revised format for the programme the day.

You can visit the online conference http://bit.ly/teeconf (Cardiff University login required) and book to attend on May 6th http://bit.ly/teebook.  The image above is a “QR code” also linking to the online conference (if you are curious, find out more about QR codes).

At this time we would like to call for contributions to the Conference for Technology Enhanced-Education from all Schools and Directorates at Cardiff University. We would like to give all staff the opportunity to highlight areas of good and innovative practice in the use of technology to enhance the student learning experience.

Contributions can be:

  • Short presentations (up to 5mins) delivered on the day.
  • Showcase presentations and hands-on demonstrations, delivered on the day to small groups during our educational technology fair
  • Posters displayed on the day.
  • Online presentations, posters and papers.

The themes for the conference are:

  • political, economic and institutional drivers
  • educational theory and research
  • enhancing the student experience
  • developments in media and technology
  • ‘the lecture’

More information on these themes can be found by visiting the online conference http://bit.ly/teethemes.

Online Presentations

Online presentations can be in a variety of forms, and we can support you in adapting and uploading you presentations. Formats you might consider include:

  • An audio or video presentation
  • A series of slides, optionally accompanied by narration
  • A report or article
  • Example learning materials

Online space is not at a premium, so presentations can be as long as needed.  Online presentations can also provide additional in-depth material to accompany a short presentation or poster.  We can provide you with assistance in recording, compositing and uploading your presentations as required, please get in touch with us to discuss this.

Short presentations

There will be (limited) space in the programme for short presentations on the day of the conference (May 6th) during the sessions on the conference themes.

Short presentations must be no longer than 5 minutes in length, but can be accompanied by an online presentation which can go into greater depth (for more detail on online presentations, see below).

Demonstrations

The programme will include a session in which participants can visit a range of demonstrations to see how technology is being used to support learning.  These demonstrations can illustrate a particular technology and the context in which it is used, giving participants an opportunity for hands on experience (if the technology is sufficiently portable to present on the day) or to see a poster or video illustrating its use – as well as a chance to discuss its application with the presenter.

We hope to include as many demonstrations as we can, within the limitations of the space provided.

Posters

Posters can be traditional paper-based or interactive posters. Posters can be accompanied by an online presentation if you would like to present further detail.

Submission

Please email your contributions to seminars@cardiff.ac.uk by 4th April, providing a title, a brief summary (1-2 paragraphs) of what you would like to propose, names of those involved (for joint contributions) and your School/s. For online presentations let us know how you would like the presentation to appear online and how we can help you with this, and feel free to include at this stage any materials that you have already prepared for the presentation. Please indicate the type of contribution/s you would like to make. Please note that we may not have the space in the programme to give all proposed short presentations and demonstrations the exposure requested.

New Case Studies

February 25th, 2011 | View Comments

A set of new case studies have been published on the case studies page of this site highlighting the development of different approaches to enhancing learning and teaching using technology. They include the use of Turnitin originality reports and Grademark to enable students to develop an understanding of referencing and plagiarism, the use of a cheap and effective technique for displaying three dimensional images in lectures, conducting module evaluations using an audience response system to minimise impact on lecture time while maximising response rates, and an promoting collaboration and digital literacy using wikis. Further details are available on the case studies page.

Nigel Morgan (INSRV) and colleagues will introduce Cardiff’s Cephalonian Method. They will discuss and demonstrate the popular presentation method which originated at the Science / Biomedical Sciences Libraries. Although designed for library orientation, this engaging method has been used in a number of other contexts including workshops and conference presentations. It has spread beyond Cardiff and is being used extensively in Europe, North America and Australasia.

Andrew Shore (BIOSI) will show how he has used Turning Point software to help engage students more fully in their learning in the lecture situation.

New tools for audio feedback

Audio feedback has the potential for delivering richer feedback in faster turnaround time than written feedback, and sending audio using the new Wimba Voice tool via the VLE is now easier than ever before.  Staff who have used audio to provide feedback to students at Cardiff University  shared their experiences at a recent QUILT Workshop, and the Wimba Voice tool for recording and delivering audio via the VLE was introduced.

Phil Davies (CHEMY) has over three years’ experience of using Audacity software to give feedback to his students. More information about his experiences, and what his students think of audio feedback, can be found below:

QUILT event, date to be confirmed, 2011

Worries about spoon-feeding are widely expressed – but what is your experience?

According to Frank Furedi, “…handing out lecture notes is a really bad idea… [it] symbolises the growing estrangement of universities from a culture of studying.  Handouts are the equivalent of the idiot’s guide of yesteryear… A handout culture helps foster a climate where ideas are not taken seriously.”

“I refuse to hand it to students on a plate” Frank Furedi

THES, 25 March 2005 http://ow.ly/24DHV

We’d like to know what you think.

  • What would it mean to ‘hand it to them on a plate’?  Is the use of handouts really in tension with taking ideas seriously?
  • What is the opposite of spoon-feeding?
  • If you use handouts, or other supplementary materials, why have you chosen to do so?  Has your practice changed over time?  Does it differ according to the course or module?
  • What do you include in your supplementary materials?  How do you design them?  At what point do you make them available to students?
  • What do you want students to do with them – and what do you think they actually do with them?

Leave a post here or send your rants, reflections or recommendations (up to 300 words, in a Word document) to education@cardiff.ac.uk.  It’s not an abstract, you won’t have to write anything up, and if we use your reflections to prompt further discussion they will be anonymised!

An exciting new development in technology to support learning, teaching and assessment is being rolled out at Cardiff University.

Questionmark Perception is an eAssessment system that enables computer-based assessments to be carried out. All staff will have access to create questions and publish tests via the web-interface for the system. In addition, there are also TWO licences available to each School for Windows-based authoring software, which allows a greater variety of question types to be used and will give more advanced options in creating questions, giving feedback to students and controlling how assessments run.

Please contact the University’s eAssessment Officer, Pete Obee (ObeePC@Cardiff.ac.uk) to suggest two members of staff from your School who would like to have access to the more sophisticated questioning software. Please be aware that these staff may need to be involved in supporting other members of staff in your School who need to use these advanced features that are not freely available through the web-interface version.

For all other staff requirements, please visit our Events page and check for future QMP Workshops.

Join the CUE at Cardiff…..!

May 27th, 2010 | View Comments

image-124068-thumbWe are pleased to announce that from July 2010 the University will have an enhanced Virtual Learning Environment, to be known as CUE (Cardiff University E-learning).

CUE has an improved interface that brings the ‘look and feel’ in line with that of the MWE and makes the system much easier and more intuitive to use for staff and students. CUE will include added functionality that meets the requirements that have been conveyed by Schools.

All existing Blackboard modules will be rolled-over to the new CUE in July, as they have in previous years. Training materials to ensure staff can easily adapt to the slight changes within the CUE will be made available and familiarisation sessions for staff will be held in each School. It is anticipated that many of the familiarisation sessions will be conducted by staff within the Schools, with the materials that will be provided centrally; however, for any School that this will not be possible, central support to deliver these will be provided.

Please contact Peter Rayment, INSRV Learning and Teaching Manager, (RaymentPJ@Cardiff.ac.uk) if you will require additional support to deliver the sessions within your School so that these can be scheduled.
